🎃 Volunteer at the 2026 Frightening Fiver! 👻

Thank you for joining us at the 2026 Frightening 5er happening October 29, 2026 at FortWhyte Alive.

The Frightening 5er wouldn't be nearly as frightening without our incredible volunteers bringing the course to life. Whether you're haunting the trails, helping at the start/finish line, or keeping our runners moving in the right direction, you're a huge part of making this spooky night a success.

  • Costumes are highly encouraged! Please arrive with enough time to check in, get organized, and be directed to your volunteer post.
  • This is an outdoor evening event, so dress warmly and layer underneath your costume. We want you giving runners chills — not getting them yourself!
  • Runners will begin hitting the trails at 6:30 PM, with the final ghosts and goblins expected across the finish line around 8:00 PM.
  • Once your shift is finished, head over to the finish line and join us for a beer or non-alcoholic brew and a warm bowl of chili while you thaw out and celebrate a frightfully fun evening.

If you require a gluten-free or vegetarian option, please email sarah@manitobamarathon.mb.ca ahead of time

Thank you for giving your time, energy, and Halloween spirit in support of FortWhyte Alive.

We can't wait to get spooky with you!

To help make this year’s race a successful and positive experience for everyone, we expect all volunteers to abide by the following policies:
1. We require that all volunteers be 18 years of age or older on the day they are volunteering as alcohol is being served at the event
2. You are expected to dress appropriately for the work duties you have been assigned. Always wear closed-toe shoes.
6. Drugs and alcohol are prohibited. We value our volunteers and participants and recognize the need for a safe, productive, healthy event environment. Volunteers may not consume, distribute or sell, be under the influence of, or be impaired by alcohol or illegal drugs (including marijuana) while working.
7. This is a smoke-free event. Volunteers are prohibited from smoking while performing their duties and in general participant areas. Please be considerate in your disposal of smoking-related materials.

Never block the path of race participants, throw items, yell or argue with participants, spectators, event staff or other volunteers. We are committed to building a culture that supports and celebrates diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our workforce and industry. Discrimination or harassment based on race, colour, religion, age, sex, gender (including gender identity, gender transition and transgender status), sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, disability, and verbal abuse (including the display of discriminatory, harassing, or hateful symbols) of any sort are not tolerated. Event staff and key volunteers have received specific training on their area’s respective volunteer positions. Please listen carefully to their instructions and comply with what they ask of you. Volunteer and participant safety is our first priority, so we need you to always be prepared and aware of your surroundings.
10. If you have any questions or need assistance, contact the nearest event staff, key volunteer, or group leader. Event Organizers can refuse or dismiss a volunteer if these policies have been violated. Please direct questions to volunteer@manitobamarathon.mb.ca

Volunteer Guidelines
 Enjoy your time as a volunteer – have fun! You are one of the reasons that race participants love coming back every year. We value your kindness and commitment to the event.
 Do not bring personal belongings. Volunteers are strongly discouraged from bringing personal belongings to the event.
 Check the weather and dress appropriately. It is essential to prepare for the weather if you are volunteering outside, so bring enough layers/clothing options to ensure that you will be comfortable for your scheduled shift.
 Arrive on time. Scheduled shift times are unique to each volunteer position
 Follow best practices concerning participant and personal safety. Use the appropriate provided personal protective equipment (PPE)
 Familiarize yourself with the Event Alert System. The Event Alert System is a colour-coded system used to communicate the status of course conditions to participants leading up to and on race day. The levels range from Low (green) to Moderate (yellow) to High (red) to Extreme (black) based primarily on the weather, as well as other conditions.
